Credit level: F5
Pre-requisites   CPE1004
    CPE1004

Description

This module will cover an introduction to biotechnology/biochemistry, focussing on a number of important products and how these are made. The module will cover the basic biochemistry of amino acids, proteins and enzymes including enzyme kinetics. A general overview of metabolism with an emphasis on the thermodynamics/bio-energetics will be discussed. The control/manipulation of important metabolic pathways will be discussed. A recent example of the importance of microbial engineering for the production of isobutanol (an advanced biofuel) will be discussed highlighting recent advances in this field. Finally, students will be required to use this knowledge for design and optimisation of bioprocesses.
